Fixing mistakes: how to edit or delete a transaction

Entered something wrong? Here's how to edit or delete a transaction and fix the most common mistakes, from wrong funds to duplicates.

Everyone enters something wrong sometimes. A typo in the amount, the wrong fund, a duplicate entry. All of it is fixable in a minute.

Editing a transaction

  1. Go to Accounting → Accounts and open the account.

  2. Find the entry in the Transactions list. Use the filters or search if the list is long.

  3. Open the entry and click Edit.

  4. Fix the date, amount, fund, category, or payee.

  5. Save. Balances and reports update instantly.

Deleting a transaction

If an entry shouldn't exist at all, like a duplicate, open it and choose Delete. The account balance and fund balances adjust right away.

💡 Tip: If the money really did move, edit instead of delete. Deleting should be for entries that never should have been recorded.

Common fixes

Wrong fund. Edit the entry and pick the correct fund. Both fund balances update on their own.

Wrong amount. Edit the entry and correct it. No need to add a second entry to make up the difference.

Duplicate entry. Delete one of the two. Keep the one with the better notes.

Entered in the wrong account. Delete the entry from the wrong account and add it in the right one.

What about giving?

Gifts that flow in from your connected funds are managed in Giving, not in Accounting. If a donation was recorded to the wrong fund or amount, correct it in Giving and your books will follow. See How to add, edit, or delete in-person giving.
